Lonnie Eugene Camden, 68, died at his home in Carrollton on Saturday, June 18, 2011, with his loving wife and children by his side.
Lonnie was born Aug. 18, 1942, in Carrollton,IL at the home of his maternal grandparents, Lowell and Loraine Hopwood Camden.
He married Kosta Lyn Willis of White Hall,IL on Oct. 28, 1966, in Alton,IL. She survives.
Lonnie celebrated his 50-year class reunion with the Carrollton Class of 1960 last year and was very happy to get back in touch with his old classmates. He worked through high school as a pinsetter at the Carrollton Bowling Lanes. Following high school, he worked as a mechanic at Pruitt Garage in Carrollton, Carrollton Foods Grocery Store in Carrollton, Valstad Quarry in Kane, and Olin in East Alton. His work at Olin was interrupted by an Army Tour in Vietnam. After returning from the war, he resumed his position at Olin for a short time before joining the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 520, where he retired in 2004 after 35 years as a crane operator. He spent the last several years of his tenure working exclusively for Waggoner Equipment Rental in Wood River,IL.
Lonnie was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, White Hall Post No. 7684, a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Ocala, Fla., Lodge No. 1199, member of the Good Sam Club and a member of Faith Baptist Church in Carrollton. In past years, he loved to roller skate as well as drag race at the White Hall Dragway, where he won numerous trophies. He always loved to spend time with his friends, camping and enjoying live music around a bonfire as well as traveling throughout the U.S. and to Canada and Mexico with his wife. Since retirement, he and his wife enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida. He was a lover of classic cars, hot rods and listening to oldies. He especially loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and his dog, Lilly.
In addition to his loving and devoted wife, Lonnie is survived by his mother, Loraine Hopwood Camden of Carrollton,IL; two sons, Randall (wife, Melisa) of Carrollton,IL, and Robert of White Hall,IL; a foster son, Robert Burnett of Belleville,IL; two daughters, Tracy Camden of Jacksonville,IL and Kelly Bartsch (husband, Rick) of Omaha, Neb.; three granddaughters, Cori Grizzle (husband, Victor) of Jerseyville,IL; Ashley Camden (fiance, John Luca) and Cheyenne Camden, all of Carrollton,IL; two great-grandsons, Taeler and Victor Grizzle of Jerseyville,IL; three brothers, Bob (wife, Donna) of Jacksonville,IL; Jerry (wife, Joyce) of rural White Hall,IL; and Mike (wife, Sandy) of Carrollton,IL; two sisters, Diane Gillespie (husband, Charlie) of rural White Hall,IL; and Sharon Pope (husband, Doug) of Carrollton,IL; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his father, Lowell Camden; his maternal grandparents, Ben and Stella Scott Hopwood; his paternal grandparents, Rolla and Blanche Camden; an infant sister, Bonnie Carolyn; and his infant twin daughters, Rebecca Sue and Terri Ann.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 23,2011 at the Airsman Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 24,2011 at the Airsman Hires Funeral Home, with Rev. Charles Barnes officiating, immediately followed by burial with military rites at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Eldred,IL.
Lunch will be served following the burial, at the Eldred Baptist Church fellowship hall.
