Mr. Elijah Alston was born April 24, 1943, to the late Tom and Betsy Alston Sr. He departed his earthly life Feb. 6, 2008, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

His formal education was received in the Public School System of Halifax County, N.C. During his early life, he was baptized at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Littleton, N.C. In later years, he moved to Hampton, Va., and joined Shalom Baptist Church, where he served on the Usher Board.

On Nov. 14, 1963, Elijah was united in Holy Matrimony to Jerlean Johnson. God blessed this union with two sons, Bobby and Elijah Jr. He was a loving husband and a dedicated father who believed in strong Christian family values. He was a man of few words and believed in workmanship. He believed in providing for his family and others who crossed his path.

He was employed at the Newport News Shipyard for 19 years, while he was also employed with the Hampton Public School System. He later became self-employed with Alston's Janitorial Service.

Those left to cherish the precious memories of his life are his wife of 43 years, Jerlean Alston; his two sons, Bobby Alston and Elijah Alston Jr. (Shawnte), all of Hampton, Va.; his three grandchildren, Malik and Sincere, both of Hampton, Va., and Kelcie of Atlanta, Ga.; his six siblings, Gid Alston, Henry Alston (Vera), all of Hampton, Va., Willie Mack Alston of Newport News, Va., Lucille Pleasants (Junius) of Hampton, Va., Tom Alston Jr. of Durham, N.C., and Betsy Dawson (Sam) of Littleton, N.C.; his aunt, Eula Alston of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; five sisters-in-law, Shirley Lee (Zeno) of Suffolk, Va., Queen Belcher of Landover Hills, Md., Angelyn Smith of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Phyllis Williams (Bruce) of Capitol Heights, Md., and Pamela Belfield (Thomas) of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; a special godmother, Florence Hawkins of Hampton, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who will miss him greatly.

Viewing will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel, 1601 27th St., Newport News, Va., and the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Family will gather at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 1815 Bay Ave., Hampton, Va., and the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple, 3100 Butternut Drive, Hampton, Va., by the Rev. Dr. Jerome A. Barber. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens.

Professional services are being handled by the staff of Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel.
