Clifton Brown Allen, son of J. E. Allen, Magistrate of District No. 1 on the Henry County Fiscal Court, died Monday morning at Norton Infirmary, Louisville, from powder burns received in an explosion Saturday at the rock quarry on the Guy Cheatham farm.
Allen, accompanied by his brother-in-law, Orville Baker, were pouring powder into a hole that had been sprung with dynamite just a few minutes before. The hole had not cooled and the powder can exploded inflicting severe burns to Allen and minor burns to Baker. Earl Allen, brother of Brown Allen, was not hurt as he was out of reach of the explosion. He suffered painful burns on his hands in tearing the burning clothing from his brother. Baker ripped his own clothes off before he was burned very badly.
Dr. Elliston rushed Brown Allen to the Louisville hospital where he died Monday morning.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Smithfield Cemetery with Rev. J. B. Yager of LaGrange officiating.
He is survived by his parents: Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Allen; a sister: Mrs. Orville Baker; two brothers: Earl Allen and Paul Allen; his wife: Mrs. Kathleen McDonald Allen, a bride of two months and two children by a former marriage, Doris Bonita, 5, and C. B. Allen, Jr., 2, all of Jericho.
Mr. Allen has conducted a milk route from Jericho to Louisville for a number of years. He attended the LaGrange High School and was a member of the Smithfield Christian Church.
