My Grandma Burgess was just the best. She was the kind of grandma that would play games with us and we all loved that. I remember one day when mother had left me at grandma's for the day and grandma decided that she and I would take a little ride out in the country to see great grandma Anna Burgess. Now grandma did not know how to drive but thought there must not be much to it and she could do it. They had this little old Ford with a rumble seat and she promptly put me in the back seat and then she pushed the car out of the garage, cranked it and we were off to the country. She kept telling me that I need not mention this to grandpa. We barely got home before grandpa but I couldn't wait to tell him of our afternoon adventure. I am afraid grandma got a terrible scolding from grandpa. Another time we walked across town to visit her sister my great aunt Zora. When we were walking home the train was sitting on the track and she got tired of waiting. She took my hand and we crawled under the train car all the while telling me that I must never try that unless she was with me. She loved for me to comb her hair and would almost fall asleep as I created some outlandish hairdos. She always had the most wonderful homemade sweet rolls; they were in a large can behind the kitchen door. She will always be remembered for her famous date pinwheel cookies she made each Christmas. I made them for years for my family and now my sons and their families make them.
Grandma would also tell me stories of her childhood and I would beg her to tell them over and over again. When I ask her about her grandparents she told me she never knew her Johnson grandparents. My next question was what their names were and she told me John and Nancy Johnson. She said her grandmother Welch lived with them for a while when she was young and grandma was blind. She said she and her sister would run up behind her and untie her apron strings and she would tap her cane on the floor and send them screaming and running. She said she was Scot on one side of the house and Irish on the other. I never forgot that and so far she has been right.
