Orlando married Mary Cullen on June 25, 1852 at Marblehead, MA. They were the parents of Frank Ellwood, born March 25, 1852; George Joseph, born Jan. 6, 1861; and William John, born April 21, 1863.
He was a 29 year-old farmer from South Danvers, MA, when he was drafted in Danvers and mustered into the 18th Mass. Infantry on July 10, 1863 as a Private in Co. B. He was taken as a Prisoner of War on or about October 12, 1863 while the Regiment was on the march from Culpepper, VA and held at Belle Island, Richmond, VA, where he died of Typhoid Fever on Dec. 12, 1863. A letter written by a fellow prisoner states he died on Dec. 6th, while an article printed in the New York Tribune stated Dec. 7th, and finally official military records list his death as Jan. 15, 1864). Records indicate that Orlando was buried at Richmond National Cemetery, however this has not yet been confirmed through Cemetery records.
