William Leroy Short, 63, of Du Quoin, passed away at 6:35 A.M., Monday, July 7, 2003 at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin. Bill worked in Chicago Heights as a train car builder. He was a member of Sunfield Baptist Church and Du Quoin Eagles. He was born September 17, 1939 at Sesser, IL, the son of Leroy Stephen and Vivian Irene (Sears) Short.
He married Iva Burger on January 15, 1961, at Grand Point, Indiana, then married Jackie Rae Bird on December 27, 1995 at Union City, Tennessee and she survives. He is survived by his wife of Du Quoin; son, William "Billy" Burger; daughter, Debra Lowe; son, Robert Short and wife Marylyn; daughter, Dian Short all of Lake Station, IN; mother, Vivian Irene Short of Du Quoin; three step daughters, Jackie "Lynn" Schmidgall of Du Quoin, Lisa Woodside of Tamaroa, and Lacy Geary of Du Quoin; three brothers, Leon Short and wife Betty of Houston, TX, Robert Short and wife Charon of Union City, TN, and Steven Short and wife Nancy of Watseka, IL, and one sister, Eloise Barnhill and Melvin Wilkins of Waynesville, MO and fourteen grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services were at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin with Rev. Everett Freeman officiating. Friends called from 5 to 8 P.M., Tuesday at the Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin. Interment was in the Ward Cemetery at Mulkeytown, IL. Friends may make memorials to Sunfield Baptist Church.
