Robert went on a hunting trip to Macoupin County, Illinois with a 16-year-old Alton High School student named Gerald Wayne Feldman. Gerald died of carbon monoxide poisoning while on the trip, and the Alton Telegraph reported that Robert's body was discovered after he had been hunting. The cause of death for him was also carbon monoxide poisoning.
At the time of his death, Robert was 17 years, 9 months and 24 days old. He was survived by his parents; 2 brothers; and 5 sisters.
Visitation was held on 05 Nov 1969 and the following morning at Marks Mortuary in Wood River, Illinois. Funeral services were conducted there at 2:30 p.m. on the afternoon of 06 Nov 1969.
The Ancell family later moved to Macon, Missouri.
