GOVIG, JOHN D.
John D. Govig, 66, of Steward, Ill., passed away Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at Pine Acres Rehab & Living Center in DeKalb.
Born Aug. 3, 1941, in Rochelle, he was the son of John and Helen (Colton) Govig. John married Nancy G. Heitmanek on Sept. 22, 1962, in Cicero. He was a Steward-area farmer for many years. He also was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Rochelle and was fire chief of the Ogle-Lee (Steward) Fire Department for 20 years. Over the years, John also was on the Steward School Board, Lee County Special Education Board and DeKalb County Fire Fighters Association, and was a Steward village trustee, Alto Township road commissioner and trustee, a crop insurance specialist and a member of the International Fire Chief Association. In 1992, John received a heart transplant at Loyola Hospital. John enjoyed spending time with his family, camping with friends, farming and caring for his yard and garden.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; three daughters, Karen Savage of Boston, Mass., Julie (Dave Carrion) Govig of Sterling and Jill (Richard) Kane of Steward; a brother, Ralph (Ruth Ann) Govig of Lanark; two sisters, Beverley (Arnold) Eykamp of Dixon and Lucile (Kenny) Abney of Tenmile, Tenn.; and eight grandchildren, Amanda, Alexis, Andrew and Aiesha Savage, Nicole and Warren Green and Kevin and Hannah Kane.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. Sixth St., Rochelle, IL 61068, with the Rev. Dr. John Hamilton officiating. Burial will be at Union Cemetery in Steward. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the funeral home.
Memorials can be made to the Steward Fire Department, DeKalb County Hospice and any organ donor program.
