J. E. Agnew, Retired Galt Postmaster, Rail Agent, Dies
John E. Agnew of Galt, retired station agent and postmaster at Galt, passed away at 9:05 p.m. on Tuesday in Community General Hospital where he was admitted at 6:50 p.m. He had been ill with a heart ailment for some time.
The body rests at the Melvin Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Melvin's by Rev. James D. McKelvey of the First Methodist Church. The burial will take place in Riverside cemetery.
John E. Agnew was born Sept. 25, 1877, at Creston, Ill., the son of William C. and Carrie Ross Agnew. At the time of his death, he was school treasurer in Hopkins Township which office he had held for 40 years. Mr. Agnew retired in 1951 from the employ of the Chicago and North Western Railway after having served 54 years as station agent in Galt. He was postmaster in Galt for 50 years.
Surviving Mr. Agnew is his widow Mrs. Olive May Agnew; one son and three daughters, John E. Agnew, Jr., of San Bernardino, Calif., Mrs. Emil J. Zadnarchek of Cedar Rapids, Ia., Mrs. Edwin W. Chase of Lombard and Mrs. Earl C. Watson of Haines City, Fla; one brother, L. D. Agnew of Agnew; nine grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. His parents, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.
