Dr. Jay C. Alameda of Dunlap, retired orthopedic surgeon, died at 5 p.m. on March 12, 2012 at Apostolic Christian Skylines in Peoria.
He was born Sept. 22, 1917 in Palma Soriano, Cuba to Jesus and Rafaelda Segura Alameda. He married Jeannine Mary Jost on June 7, 1962, in Peoria. She survives.
He is also survived by one son, Jay C. (Susan) Alameda Jr. of Champaign; three daughters, Jeannine Marie Alameda (Tom Walega) of Naperville, Jennifer V. (James) Huffman of Powder Springs, Ga. and Dr. Jessica A. (Richard M.) Guingrich of Peoria Heights; nine grandchildren, Emily and Josefina Alameda, Jason and John Huffman, and Ashley, Richard A., Chelsea, Maggie Rose and Michael Guingrich; several nieces and nephews; three brothers, Bernard of Chicago, Joaquin and Fsoislan of Cuba and four sisters, Ermilia Jaume and Clara Berta Rotgers, both of Florida, and Martha and Lillian of Cuba.
Dr. Alameda was a graduate of the Institute of Higher Education, Santiago de Cuba, earning his bachelor's and master's degrees. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Havana School of Medicine, Havana, Cuba, in 1943 and came to the United States for an internship at Alexion Brothers Hospital in Chicago. He then completed a general surgery residency at Saint Francis Hospital of Peoria in 1946.
Dr. Alameda was in general practice for six years in Peoria Heights. In 1952 he began his orthopedic residency, which was interrupted when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served as a captain within the orthopedic department during the Korean War at the U.S. Army Hospital, Stuttgart, Germany, from 1953-1955, after which he was honorably discharged as a major.
