PEORIA, IL - The Rev. Mubarak A. Amar, 64, of Peoria passed away at 2:28 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
He was born Benedict A. Amar on June 22, 1944, in Chicago to Dr. Wesley F. and Yvonne Van Lent Amar.
His parents preceded him in death.
He is survived by one sister, Yvonne (Charles) Frey of Peoria and one nephew, Benedict (Kerry) Frey of Chicago.
He graduated from Leo High School in Chicago and obtained a B.A. from Loyola University in 1966 and a Ph.D. in classical philosophy from Princeton University.
In the 1970s he taught philosophy at Beirut University College in Beirut, Lebanon. Subsequently, he worked in pastoral care at the Mariners House of Montreal in Canada. He attended and taught at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, Conn., and was ordained a priest on Dec. 21, 1991.
He also became a Benedictine Oblate on Jan. 10, 1988, at St. Procopious Monastery in Lisle, Ill. He served as assistant pastor at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Champaign, Ill., and pastor at the following churches: St. Patrick's in Elkhart, St. Thomas Aquinas in Mount Pulaski, St. John the Baptist in Middletown and St. Mary's in DePue. He was Chaplain for the Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree Spalding Assembly No. 206.
He taught theology at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, Neb., until 2002.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Most Rev. Daniel R. Jenky, Bishop of Peoria, is officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Catholic Diocese of Peoria.
