Jerry was the son of Frank and Hattie Roach Alltop. He married Marlene Buttschau on Dec. 14, 1953, in Iowa City.

She survives, along with three sons, Tom (Marilyn) Alltop, Daniel (Robin) Alltop and Stephen (Marilu) Alltop; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Alltop and Morris Alltop; two sisters, Mary Jane (Myron) Holmes and Jeanette (James) Pritchard; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two nephews.

Jerry served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was an Illinois State Trooper for 25 years, working out of District 8 in Metamora and retiring in 1991. During the latter part of his career, he worked with the K-9 Team.
