This is the grave of Benjamin Chase, who was born in Sutton, Worcester County, MA on May 30, 1783. He was a son of Josiah Chase (20 Feb 1748 - 2 Aug 1813) and Hannah Goddard (25 Aug 1749 - 1 Dec 1801), who left Massachusetts in 1791 and settled in Worcester, New York, and was a direct descendent of Aquila Chase. Before 1809 he married Mehitable Russell (born ca. 1786, parentage currently unknown) and fathered Samuel Russell (1809-1908), Cyrus Benedict (1813-1866), Henry Clay (1815-1885), and Betsy Ann (1818-1881).
Cyrus Benedict Chase married Hannah Marie Annis and Betsy Ann Chase married Horace Sunderlin Eldredge, both of whom had prominent connections in the early Latter Day Saints movement, which had origins in New York State before moving to the Midwest and then on to Utah. Perhaps this is why, in part, he moved his family west to Illinois by 1840, as indicated by the 1840 census of Malone, IL. The 1850 census shows him and Mehitable living with their son Cyrus and family. Other than this gravestone, there is no indication of the year of place of his death, but the age given is exact.
During the summer of 1870, Mehitable Russell Chase moved to Salt Lake City, Utah to be with her daughter Betsy Ann Chase Eldredge, where she died on February 23, 1874 and was buried.
