Michael Alcorn
Mike David Alcorn of Henderson, Nev., died Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Charlier Hospice in Evansville, Indiana, just a few city blocks from where he was born on March 10, 1948, the son of Ralph and Maynette Jarboe Alcorn.
Mike was a graduate of Grayville High School and spent his summers working for the Old House restaurant and the A&G concession stand at the Grayville Pool during the 1960s. The Gray Mansion and the Blood House in Grayville piqued Mike's interest for Architecture.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kentucky and interned at Condict and Fosse in Evansville. He completed his Master of Science in Architecture from the University of Illinois. He also garnered a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Art Institute of Chicago.
Mike was an integral member of the School of Architecture in the University of Nevada Las Vegas' College of Fine Arts since 1993. An Associate Professor at the time of his passing, Mike will be remembered for his collegial enthusiasm and selfless commitment to the advancement of the School of Architecture and its students. Over the course of his career, he served in a range of capacities, including Assistant Dean, Foundation Curriculum Coordinator, Graduate Program Coordinator, Chair or Member of numerous University committees and, most significantly, as the first Director of the School of Architecture. It is in this capacity that Mike made his most significant contributions to the School and University. At the time he joined UNLV, the School of Architecture was a fledgling non-accredited program located in temporary facilities and struggling to maintain enrollment. Under Mike's influence, what the program lacked in history and resources was more than compensated by the esprit de corps of its student and mostly adjunct faculty. Throughout the early years of the program, Mike worked tirelessly to improve the school's facilities, the strength of its curriculum, and the quality of its faculty. The result of this effort and personal sacrifice was the Architecture Program's initial accreditation in 1997. The School of Architecture, as it exists today, is a legacy to his vision and dedication. In addition to his leadership, Mike was an exceptional educator, teaching at all levels of the program. Practically every student, from Freshmen to Graduate, who has progressed through the architecture program has had him as an instructor. Mike will be fondly remembered by his former students as well as the faculty.
During his time at UNLV, Mike also joined the architectural firm of Tate Snyder Kimsey of Henderson, Nevada. He served as Vice President of Operations until he succumbed. In addition to his multiple duties at the firm, they also relied on Mike's personality and wisdom to bridge the academic and practical side of architecture for student interns.
Mike Alcorn is the author of "Between You and A Hideous Monstrosity," a traveling photographic exhibit of houses produced by Geo. F. Barber & Co. between 1888 and 1912. The exhibit features over 150 different designs produced by the Barber firm located in 45 states. The exhibit is a product of a ten-year research of the Barber firm.
Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Becki Alcorn of Grayville, Illinois; a niece and her husband, Tami and Tony Farrill of Evansville, Indiana; a great-nephew, Elih Tani-Farrill of Evansville, Indiana; two aunts, Becky Groff of Breese, Illinois and Rose Maruyama of Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
