Here is some biographical information about my Great, Great, Uncle George H. Cowden.

============================================================

George Harrison Cowden was the second son of Henry Marcus Cowden and Mary Cowden.

Mary Dush Cowden was Henry Cowden's first wife.

Henry Marcus Cowden was the founder of Cowden, Illinois in 1872.

George Cowden married Erva Belle Nichols on January 20, 1883 in Cowden, Shelby County, Illinois.

Erva Belle Nichols was born in 1861 and died in 1953.

Erva and George Cowden had six children.

The children's names were Orval, Lottae, Ancil Edward, Mabel Arrena, Lenora Ernestine, and Mary Kathleen.

Orval and Lottae didn't live more than 3 years.

Ancil Edward Cowden died at about the age of 25 years old in Garland County, Arkansas.

I found that Mary Kathleen Cowden had married a man named Edwin Fell Graham and here's a link to a Find-A-Grave website page for Kathleen M., nee Cowden, Graham:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/137164250/kathleen-m-graham

Apparently Mary Kathleen liked her middle name more than her first name and switched her name around later in life.

Lenora Ernestine Cowden married a man named Charles Andrew Blume. Lenora Blume died in October 1974 in Madison County, Illinois. Charles Blume died in April 1983 in Madison County, Illinois. I haven't found out where they are buried yet.

After George Cowden's death in 1911 Erva Belle Nichols Cowden married David M. Duddlesten.

I don't have the date or location for the second marriage of Erva Cowden to David Duddlesten.

I found a 1930 census record for Stewardson, Shelby County, Illinois showing a David M. Duddlesten and his wife Erva Belle Duddlesten.

George and Erva Cowden Duddlesten are both buried in Mound Cemetery which is about a 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile north of Cowden, Illinois just off of Route 128.

The following obituary was transcribed from the Thursday Morning October 12, 1911 Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois "The Danville Press-Democrat" Newspaper.

The obituary was printed on page 5 of the newspaper.

GEORGE H. COWDEN

George H. Cowden, 52 years old, died at his home, 907 East Main street, at 10:45 o'clock yesterday morning, Oct. 11, 1911, of pulmonary tuberculosis, after an illness of eighteen months.

He is survived by a wife and two daughters and one son, the latter being in the west.

The remains will be taken to Cowden, Ill. at 7 o'clock this morning over the C & E.I. railroad, and the funeral will be held there Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

There was an additional funeral article transcribed from the Friday Morning October 13, 1911 Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois "The Danville Press-Democrat" Newspaper.

The funeral article was printed on page 9 of the newspaper.

GEORGE H. COWDEN

The remains of George H. Cowden, who died at his home, 907 East Main street, Tuesday morning, Oct. 11, 1911, were shipped yesterday morning to his old home at Cowden, Ill. where the funeral and burial will occur today.

The second newspaper article states that George Cowden died on Tuesday morning, Oct. 11, 1911, yet if you look on a calendar for October 1911, you will see that October 11, 1911, was on a Wednesday.

NOTE: I recently received a death certificate for George H. Cowden from the Vermilion County, Illinois, County Clerk's office.

The death certificate states that George H. Cowden's last occupation was as a merchant.

In this death certificate it states that a woman named Sarah Sevre was the mother of George H. Cowden.

I have found an 1860 Census record for the South District, Holland Township, Shelby County, Illinois, page 89, that shows a 23 year old woman named Sarah M. Severe that was born in Ohio and was living in Shelby County, Illinois about the time of Edward Cowden's birth. The father of this Sarah M. Severe was Jessee Severe and the mother was Esther A. Severe.

The last name on the death certificate was spelled Sevre and not Severe, but maybe the informant, Charles Blume, spelled the last name wrong. Unfortunately, there's no way to know for sure if Charles spelled the last name wrong or not.

George H. Cowden's father, Henry Cowden, was married to the former Mary Dush, until Mary died on September 11, 1860, so unless Henry Cowden had an affair with this woman named Sarah Severe, then I don't see how this Sarah Severe could be the mother of George H. Cowden.

The death certificate stated that George H. Cowden was 52 years, 7 months, 9 days and 15 hours old at the time of his death, which the death certificate stated was on October 11, 1911, around 10:45 p.m..

The death certificate also stated that George H. Cowden was born in 1845, but the picture of George H. Cowden's tombstone, shows that he was born in 1859, so either the tombstone or the death certificate is wrong about the year that George Cowden was born.

The informant's name that provided the information for the death certificate was listed as a man named Chas A. Blume from Edwardsville, Illinois.

I found out from Dorothy Carruth, a descendant of George Cowden, that Chas A. Blume is related to the George H. Cowden family by his marriage to one of George Cowden's daughters, who was named Lenora Ernestine Cowden.

Since the information on death certificate's is provided by someone that may or may not know all of the correct information for the deceased person, I tend to view death certificate information very skeptically and try to find other information to back up what what is stated on the death certificate.

Brothers of George Harrison Cowden:

Joseph H. Cowden, born on March 30, 1857 in Shelby County, Illinois and died on June 12, 1859 in Shelby County, Illinois. Joseph Cowden only lived 2 years, 2 months, and 13 days.
