Herschel Abbey of Carmi was one of the first in White County to operate a tractor. Judge C.S. Conger bought two of the new-fangled machines back in 1917; both were chain driven and one was a one cylindar Titan. Many peoople were skeptical they would catch on. But Herschel and Judge Conger were fascinated with them and Herschel bought three more after he started farming for himself. He became so good at fixing the machinery that he was hired as a full time mechanic in 1931 by Dougherty Implement Co in Carmi. He opened his own repair shop in 1945 and in addition to repairs, he sells International Trucks and Kaiser-Frazer Autos. Herschel continues to raise stock as well. He and his wife, the former Mabel Young, have seven children and 11 grand children. He was an active Modern Woodsman, Elks, Moose and Odd Fellows.
