Melvin Benefiel, 25, brother of Mrs. Calvin Haring of Edwardsville route 4, was killed and his twin brother Elvin was seriously injured early Sunday morning when the car in which the two young men were riding overturned on a curve of State Route 140, five miles west of Greenville.
State police said the eastbound auto, driven by Elvin, failed to negotiate the curve, ran off the highway and upset about 2:45 a.m. The driver, who resides at Greenville, was taken to St. Joseph hospital in Highland where his physician said Monday he had suffered a brain concussion, possible internal injuries and lacerations of the scalp, right arm and left leg.
The deceased brother, formerly of Greenville, lived with his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Haring.
In addition the injured brother and Mrs. Haring he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil [Elvia Neathery] Benefiel, Greenville, and four other sisters: Mrs. Linda Phillips, Cottage Hills; Mrs. Simon Sidwell, Hartford; Mrs. Irvin Hedgepath, Highland; and Mrs. Wendell Green of Greenville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Liberty church at Greenville. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
