Melvin E. Baney, 86, of 302 Illinois Ave., died at 6:35 p.m. , Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 13 in the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home, West Frankfort, with the Rev. Becky Brault officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday to the funeral home. Mr. Baney was born on Sept. 8, 1912, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Gail Ruby (McMeens)Baney. He was married to Frances (Steh) Baney on July 22, 1933 in West Frankfort. She survives. He was a retired painter and a member of the Harmony International Brothers of Painters and Allied Trades Union Local #32. He was very active in Democrat politics and had served as a precinct committeman, Denning Township trustee and clerk, Franklin County Board of Trustees and president of the Joiner School Baord of Education. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where he served on the administration board and was president of the Harmony Sunday School Class. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Donna Sue Bozarth and husband Joe of West Frankfort; three grandchildren, Cynthia Crabtree and husband Jerry of West Frankfort; Georgia Moore of West Frankfort; Doug Moore and wife Becky of West Frankfort; four great-grandchildren, Cara Broy, Alyssa, Nathan and Ashlee Moore, all of West Frankfort; one brother Gailord Baney and wife Geneva of Sesser; three sisters, Ruth Funcannon of Benton, Eleanor Ferguson of West Frankfort, Gretta Sanders of California; several nieces and nephews. Friends who wish may make memorials to Hospice of Southern Illinois or to the First United Methodist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
