A train-car collision on Friday, October 22, 1965 claimed the life of Nelda Alexander, 17, of White Heath. Funeral services were held Monday in the Monticello Methodist Church with burial in Ingram Cemetery near White Heath.
She was born June 17, 1948 at Monticello, d/o Leslie A. Alexander (1920-2001) and Juanita Beard Alexander (1921-2007). She is survived by her parents and three sisters: Mary Ann, Deborah and Pamela, all at home; one brother, Arlie of Champaign; her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Nellie Alexander, White Heath; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Henry Beard, Mansfield.
In the accident with her was her sister Debbie, 15, and Marsha Harms, 17 of Cisco. The girls, members of the Monticello High School band had just left the Monticello-Arthur game at half time to go to the home of Mrs. Dale Leach on West William Street to change their uniforms before going to the dance following the game. The car stopped before proceeding over the West William Street crossing of the Norfolk & Western Railroad and then pulled onto the tracks and in front of the approaching train. A string of empty freight cars on the siding is believed to have obscured the girls' vision of the approaching train. Marsha was admitted to the hospital with a broken leg and Debbie was treated for a fractured hand and fingers and was released.
