Pearl Ahrenkiel, 98, of Springfield died Wednesday, May 12, 2004, at Oak Terrace Health Care Center. She was born Nov. 17, 1905, in Pottersville, Mo., the daughter of James W. and Ida Johns Hopkins. She married Chris Ahrenkiel Jr. in 1953 in Springfield; he died in 1977.
Mrs. Ahrenkiel graduated from Wesley School of Nursing in Oklahoma City and did postgraduate work at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago and Children's Hospital in Detroit. She graduated from Columbia University in New York City with a degree in public health nursing. She served as chief of the Illinois Division of Public Health Nursing from 1956-69.
She was elected to the Hall of Fame of the Senior Citizens of Sangamon County Inc. in 1985 and received the ICHHS Home Health Service award for being an organizer of Home Health Services of Illinois. She was elected to Kappa Charter of Kappa Delta Pi and was a member of the United Methodist Women and Zonta Club.
Survivors: a sister, Velma Kelley of Springfield; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and a great-great-niece.
Services: Kumler United Methodist Church, the Rev. William Burton officiating. Burial: Hall Cemetery, Athens.
