Married Phebe Lathrop, March 23, 1827, Wells, Vermont. Elihu brought his wife and family of 3 children to Boone County in 1840. They came by covered wagon from Port Stanley, Ontario, Canada. They had gone to Canada from Whitehall, Washington County, New York in 1832. After arriving in Illinois, they lived for a short time with Mrs. Cline's sisters and husband, the Elias Martins.
The Cline farm was located in the NW corner of Belvidere Township; remained in the possession of the family for over 110 years. There were no schools at the time, and so all the neighbors organized one. Marcia Louisa (age 16 years) taught in this first school that met in her father's new cow barn. Her pay was a black silk apron. some of the neighbors paid her father in labor.
