Benjamin F. Guy was born Jan. 11, 1817 in North Carolina according to the 1880 census.
Both his parents were also born in North Carolina. We haven't much information about him but we know he moved to Tennessee before 1851. His son, Nathanial Benjamin Guy was born in Dresden (Weakley Co.) Tennessee April 16, 1851. Ben Junior's mother was Nancy Garratt (or Jarratt).
In the 1860 census Ben Jr. was living with a tobacco farmer and his wife in Weakly Co. Ben is not listed in the 1860 Tennessee census. The farmer's name was Thomas Cole.
Ben also had a daughter, Mary, born in 1863. On the 1880 census, she listed her birthplace as Illinois. Her first husband, Judson Eastwood, was born in IL in 1860. In 1880 she had an infant daughter named Dora. Her second husband's name was John Shumaker. Mary and John, as well as Joe's sister, Emma Meyer, are buried in the Ohio chapel cemetery east of Grand Chain, Pulaski co, IL
According to family lore, a son of Ben was killed in the Civil War and is buried in the National Cemetery in Mound City, IL. Ben may have had children over a period of 40 years. It is possible he had 4 wives.
Ben and his family came to Illinois in 1866 with a group of other neighbors. This was just after the Civil war and western Tennessee was overrun with raiders and other criminal thugs. They started out with good horses but the horses were stolen and they entered Ill. with skinny mules and ponies. They hid their money in the bottom of a keg of soft soap so it would not be stolen.

Ben married again and in 1880 he was farming in Pulaski Co and living with a young wife and 4 young children. Ben's wife (Grandpa Jo's mother) was named Catherine (Elsie) Lackey. She was born in 1856 in Illinois and her father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in Illinois. Sometime after 1880, Catherine ran off and left her family. The young children went to live with other families in the neighborhood. James was raised by an unknown family but in his adult life, he lived in Williamson Co., IL and worked as a coal miner. He married and had several children. Joe was taken in by the George Victor family. The raised him but for some reason they did not send him to school. He was illiterate. We don't know who took care of Lucy and Emma.
Ben died Feb. 6, 1890. He, along with N. Benjamin and his wife, Mary Della, are buried at Eastwood cemetery, Pulaski County, IL.
