|Birth: ||Jan. 2, 1820|
|Death: ||Jun. 24, 1870|
She was a daughter of John and Sarah (Wilson) Venard and the wife of Russell Rigg. Her cause of death was listed as a "fall" in the 1870 mortality index of Bethel Township, McDonough County, that is linked to the federal census of that year.
She married Russell Rigg, 11/2/1845, in McDonough Co, IL. Their children were: Mary E. (1846); James Luther (1848); John L. (1850); Samuel (1852); William Dudley (1854); Andrew Nelson (1860); and Sarah A. (1863).
Her interment in this cemetery is documented by: Duane Lester's, "Rural Cemeteries of McDonough County, Illinois, Volume II, Bethel-Industry." The remains of the stone as they appear in March 2008 are pictured at right. There are enough pieces to link this stone to Sarah Rigg (last name, date of death, age at death). Lester's publication (likely circa late 1970's) states that the original inscription read: "Sarah Jane, wife of Russell; d. Jun 24, 1870; age 50y 5m 22d." Other pieces of her stone may be nearby or covered by mud and debris.
Her husband, Russell Rigg, a life-long farmer, was a son of Samuel and Nancy Rigg. His father and mother were born in Maryland and South Carolina, respectively. Russell was born in Greenup county, Kentucky, June 7, 1821. The Rigg family removed to Sangamon county, Illinois in 1828. In 1835 they moved to McDonough County, after purchasing 240 acres located on section 1, Bethel township. After his first wife's death, he married Eliza Jane Lucas on 2/2/1871. They had one son, George M. Russell Rigg died in Industry, McDonough Co, 1892; his second wife, Eliza, died there in 1891.
