Thomas Jacob Poe was born in Hardin County, Kentucky on February 21, 1813.
Thomas Poe and Jane Barnet McDowell were married June 1, 1834 in Kentucky. To this union were born three children; Elizabeth A. M.on April 25, 1835, Margaret Lousinda on May 21, 1837, Virgil on May 19, 1839.
Thomas and Jane brought their family to Brown County(then Schuyler County) in 1837. Land records show he purchased 200 acres of land in Section 4, 5, and 8, Pea Ridge Township in November 1837 for $450. The next year, in May 1838, he purchased 80 acres in Section 36, Huntsville Township,Schuyler County for $450., where he made his permanent home.
Mr. Poe was a carpenter by occupation and made cabinets, tables chairs, and coffins.
On January 13, 1842, Thomas Poe and a partner, Andrew Babb, purchased 88 acres in Section 30, Camden Township, Schuyler County, Il for $2000. This property was located on Missouri Creek and included a gristmill. They expanded the mill to be a sawmill also and after Babb's death in 1851 Thomas poe purchased the entire interest in the mill.
Thomas and Jane lived in one of first two story frame house built in Huntsville. Thomas had built the house using lumber he had sawed in his sawmill. In addition to being a carpenter, girst and saw mill operator, Thomas farmed and bought and sold land.
On February 2, 1850, Jane Poe died and was buried in Clark-Campbell cemetery.
Later that same year, on October 8, 1850 Thomas Poe married Rebecca Bond. Six children were born to this union; Louisa, March 19, 1852, Emma April 16, 1856, Olive December 15, 1859, Octavia August26, 1860, Marietta March 11, 1861.
Thomas served as township supervisor for Huntsville Twp., he was active in the Masonic Lodge. Sometime betweel 1856 and 1859, he built Clark Church and School on land he had donated and for years Cumberland Presbyterians held their services there.
Mr. Poe died from a heart attack in his home on April 13, 1865.
Burial in Clark-Campbell Cemeter in Missouri Township, Brown County, Il.
