Remains of Brother of Local Woman Will Be Sent Here for Services and Burial
Robert Alexander, 44 years old, a former resident of Rock Island and a brother of Mrs. A.W. Billburg, 2556 Eighth avenue, was fatally injured in Beardstown yesterday.
He died several hours after having been crushed when a box car fell upon him. He was a car repairer for the Burlington road. While making some repairs on a freight car it fell over upon him, fracturing bones in his body and rendering him unconscious.
News of his death was received late yesterday afternoon by Mrs. Billburg. Earlier information she had received announced his injury but the seriousness of the accident was not explained in the first message and the news of his death came somewhat as a shock.
He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, April 12, 1873. When he was 10 years old he removed to America with his parents, the late Mr and Mrs Robert Alexander. They first located in Cable and later removed to Rock Island, where he lived for a number of years. Subsequently he moved to Moline, and nine years ago from there to Beardstown, where he since had been employed at the occupation he was engaged in at the time of his death.
During his residence in Rock Island, he and Miss Hattie Brown (Downes) of his city were united in marriage. To this union two sons were born, Ralph and Robert. The widow and children survive. He also leaves to mourn his death three sisters and two brothers. The sisters are Mrs. John Mason of East St Louis, Mrs. Don Aflars of St Louis and Mrs. Billburg of Rock Island. the brothers are John Alexander of St. Louis.
The remains will be shipped to Rock Island tomorrow morning and will be taken to the home of Mrs. Billburg where services will be held in the afternoon. The Moline lodge of Oddfellows, of which he was a member, will have charge of the services. Burial will be in Chippiannock cemetery.
