DIXON – John A. "Jack" Baker, 80, of Dixon, died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at his home after a long illness.
He was employed by Eagle's, Princeton, as a meat cutter, before retiring.
Jack was born May 17, 1929, in Dixon, the son of George H. and Esther T. (Carlson) Baker. He served in the Army. Jack married Barbara M. Lowe on July 12, 1952, in Dixon. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, was an excellent carpenter, and loved to cook. John was the last survivor of his immediate family.
Survivors include his wife of Dixon; one son, John A. (Gloria) Baker Jr. of Kirkwood; and two daughters, Bonnie (Mike) Skeffington and Cathy (Doug) Delhotal, both of Dixon. "Poppy" also is survived by eight grandchildren, Shawn Baker, Desiree Yocum, Josh (Sara) Delhotal, and William and Megan Skeffington, all of Dixon, John A. (Yesinia) Baker III of Grand Rapids, Mich., Ryan Baker of Kirkwood, and Sgt. Adam Delhotal of Fort Bliss, Texas; and four great-grandchildren, Nolan and Mackenzie Yocum, and Eric Delhotal, all of Dixon, and Katherine Baker of Grand Rapids, Mich.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Ellen; his parents; two brothers, George and Warren Baker; and two sisters, Esther Spangler and Margaret Stover.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home, Dixon, with Rita Wolf, chaplain of Hospice of the Rock River Valley, officiating. Burial, with full military honors accorded by the combined Dixon veterans organization, is at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Dixon. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Rock River Valley, Dixon.
