Merl & his wife Gladys C Rourke-Blackwood, were well known artists, both having graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago. They have four historical diaramas: the Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Henney Co.; W. T. Rawleigh Co.; Knowlton General Store, on permanent display at the Stephenson County Historical Museum. He taught at the Freeport High School from 1934-1960.
