Wife of Andrew Burnett
Aledo Weekly Record - January 20, 1881
Died January 20, 1881, at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. James W. Kimel, of this township, Mrs. Mehitable Burnett in the 83rd of her life.
Mehitable Conner was born in Salem, Washington county, New York in 1798. Here she was married to Andrew Burnett and in 1838 removed with him to this county and settled at what is known as the old Burnett farm in Ohio Grove township where they resided until the death of Mr. B. in 1861 since which time, Mrs. B. has made home with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Kimel.
At the age of 16 she united with the UP Church of which she remained a constant and faithful member until about four years ago, when for convenience of church facilities she transferred her membership to the M.E. Church of Aledo. She was a earnest and consistent christian, a kind and loving wife and mother, outstanding in the free hospitality so characteristic of the early settlers, and most highly esteemed as a friend and neighbor by all who knew her.
She was the mother of six children, three boys and three girls, three of who survive her, Albert G., at Parsons, Kan.;
Frank G., at Ouray, Colorado; and Mrs. Kimel. One son Capt. James Burnett of Co. G. 30th Ills., was killed at Champion Hill, Miss. on May 16, 1863 and was brought home for interment, his funeral being one of the largest ever known in the county. Her health was remarkably good for one her age, until within the past two years, when it gradually failed, but she was not confined to her bed until about one week prior to her death.
The funeral on Sunday was very largely attended, the services being conducted at the residence of Mr. Kimel by Rev. Wm. McPheeters, and her remains now rest beside those of her husband in the Candor cemetery. Thus one by one pass away the early settlers of our county, and soon all will be gone.
