Stanford man killed in crash
A Stanford man was killed in a single-car accident on Old U.S. 66 just south of the Paul F. Beich Co. candy manufacturing plant on Bloomington's southwest edge about 2 a.m. yesterday.
Michael Babbs, 27, the car's driver, died of massive internal injuries at the scene, a spokeswoman for the McLean County coroner's office said.
A passenger, Jeffrey England, 24, Stanford, declined treatment for minor injuries, according to Illinois state police.
Police said Babbs was driving south on Old U.S. 66 when the car went off the road on the east side and struck a fence separating Old U.S. 66 from Interstate 55.
The then crossed Old U.S. 66 and went into a ditch on the west side of the road before turning over three times, police said.
Babbs was thrown from the vehicle.

STANFORD – The funeral of Michael E. Babbs, 27, of 422 W. Main St., who was killed at 2:15 a.m. yesterday (May 16, 1983) in an auto accident, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at McReynolds Funeral Chapel, Stanford, the Rev. Oscar S. Owens officiating. Burial will be in Brooks Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel.
He was born June 8, 1955, at Bloomington, a son of Donald and Betty A. Walker Babbs.
Surviving are his parents, Stanford; a brother, James, at home; and three sisters, Carol S. Smith, Grandview Estates, Bloomington; Janet M. May and Debra J. May, both of Fisher.
His grandparents preceded him in death.
Mr. Babbs was employed by Ragland Builders, Hopedale.
He was an Olympia High School graduate.
