Homer Dean Babbs
Worker Topples 18 Feet to Death
Stanford Man Fatally Hurt At Factory
An employee of the Alpha Cellulose Corporation was killed early Wednesday morning as he reached for a cotton linter bale, lost his balance and plunged through a trap door to a floor 18 feet below.
Homer D. Babbs, 26, of Stanford, who had been employed at the plant at 1000 W. Perry St., since April, 1954, was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Joseph's Hospital. The accident occurred at 6:45 a.m.
According to the insurance agent handling the incident for his company, workmen were raising a bale through a trap door to a platform on which Babbs and Ernest Adams of 802 N. Roosevelt Ave. grabbed for the bale when a chain slipped.
Believe Skull Fractured
It was then that the workman lost his balance and fell. It was believed Babbs' skull was fractured in the plunge, the agent reported.
He was taken to McReynolds Funeral Home in Minier and visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the Stanford Christian Church. His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Christian Church with the Rev. Fred Penniston officiating. Burial will be in Brooks Grove Cemetery south of Stanford.
