JOHN BUTCHER PASSES AWAY VERY SUDDENLY

John Butcher, an old resident of the Filson community, walked into the house Sunday morning about 10:30 o'clock and sat down by the stove. A few minutes later he suffered a choking spell and apparently choked to death.
Mr. Butcher's health had been affected for the past few months but recently he appeared to be better than usual. He was feeling well when he arose Sunday morning and up till the time of the attack which caused his death.
John Butcher was born August 9, 1834 in Berkshire, England, departed this life Sunday morning, February 26, 1922. Age 87 years, 4 months and 17 days. He being one of eight children.
At the age of eighteen in company with his brother James, he came to America, first settling near Newark, Ohio, living there ten years. He married Margaret J. Edington in 1861. Moving to Illinois in 1864, settling at the west timber near Bourbon, living there seven years, moving to the present home in 1871 when it was raw prairie, Living the pioneer life, seeing the hardships of earlier days.
They were the parents of ten children, Mrs. Anna Barnett of Toledo, Ill., Benjamin of Hindsboro, Mrs. Will Cuppy of Arcola, Robert Harvey passing away in infancy, Mrs. Fred Seaman of Hindsboro, Mrs. Charles Walling of Mattoon, J. William, James O. and Edson, all of Montana, and Mrs. John Wright lives at the home place with the father.
Mr. Butcher was a man of good morals, quiet disposition, with many friends. He leaves to mourn his loss besides his children, thirty grandchildren, twelve grandchildren two nieces, two nephews in Ohio and a host of friends.
The funeral services were conducted at the Mt. Gilead Church, Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, R. N. Montague of the Hindsboro M. E. church officiating. A quartette composed of Mrs. O. V. Schaeffer, Mrs. H. L. Crawford, Mrs. Fae Green and Mrs. Frank Wilson furnished the music. Interment in Broadus cemetery.

JOHN BUTCHER DIED SUNDAY

OVER 87 YEARS OF AGE AND WAS A PIONEER SETTLER OF DOUGLAS COUNTY

John Butcher one of the pioneer settlers of Douglas county, died at his home east of Arcola in the Kemp neighborhood Sunday morning about 10:30 o'clock. The funeral is being held today at Mt. Gilead church and interment will be made in the Broadus cemetery. He was over eighty-seven years of age being born in Berkshire, England, August 9, 1834. At the age of eighteen in company with his brother James he came to United States first settling near Newark, Ohio, where he lived for 10 years. He there married Margaret J. Edington in 1861 and in 1864 came to Illinois settling in the timber over near Bourbon. He lived there for seven years and then moved to a farm east of Arcola where he spent the remainder of his days. All of this country was then raw prairie and the early settlers saw many hardships that the present generation knew little about.
Ten children were born to this union, one dying in infancy. Mrs. Butcher died several years ago.
The children are: Mrs. Ann Barnett of Toledo, Ill.; William, James and Edson of Montana; Ben of Hindsboro; Mrs. Daisy Wright of Kemp; Mrs. Esther Cuppy and Amelia Seaman of near Arcola.
Mr. Butcher was a man of good morals, of a quiet disposition and had a wide circle of friends. He is survived by thirty grandchildren and twelve great grand children, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mr. Butcher had been a constant reader of this paper for a half century or more and was one of our valued friends.
