George Hiltabrand b:06-18-1799, Lincoln Co.NC.d:10-20-1870 (after heat stroke) Caledonia, Putnam Co.IL. married Elizabeth Gunn 12-02-1824 Robertson Co. Tenn. She was born at Caswell Co.NC. 1804 daughter of Daniel Gunn and Jerusha Winn. They settled on the Oxbow (Caledonia). The both of them were members of the Old School Baptist Church, Magnolia Township, Putnam Co. IL. During the Black Hawk War, George served as a sergeant in Captain William Haws Company of Mounted volunteers belonging to the 14th regiment,4th Brigade and 1st Division of the Illinois Militia. He was mustered out of the service at Hennepin on June 2nd 1832. Both were buried at the Boyle Cem. Magnolia,IL.

Though comparatively a young man, George D. Hiltabrand already convinced he possesses exceptional business and finacial ability, and during the six years of his residence in Tonica, LaSalle County, he has been a untiring worker in the interest of the place-a fact thoroughly appreiated by its citizens The standing of a town or community in the public opinion is a matter that should be of great concern to every inhabitant of the place, for true patriotism, like charity, should begin, though not end at home.

The grandfathers of our subject were numbered among the early pioneers of Illinois, and his relatives have borne an important part in the developement of it resources. George Hiltabrand, his paternal grandfather, was a native of North Carolina, and lived in Tennessee prior to his removal to Magnolia township, Putnam County, Illinois, in 1827. His farm was located at place known as Ox Bow, and there he resided until his death, which event occurred when he was nearly three score and ten years of age. Jeremiah Hartenbower, the maternal grandfather, was born in Germany, came to America in the '20's and about 1830 located in Putnam county.
