Edith "Edie" V. Campo of Springfield died at 9:20 am, Sunday, June 12, 2011 at her home, of congestive heart failure.

She was born the daughter of Elmer and Lillie Mae Bible Woods on February 15, 1919 in Louisville, IL. Edith is survived by her son, Terry T. Campo of Arlington, VA; step-son, Carl Campo of Reeds Spring, MO; sister, Mae Blankenship of Springfield, IL, two brothers, Leslie and Charles (wife Pat) Woods both of Springfield, IL and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Edith was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Delbert and Orville Woods.

Upon graduating from Ashland IL High School in 1937, the then-Edith Woods worked for several years in Pleasant Plains before moving to Springfield. She recalled being on a date at the Springfield roller-skating rink when a public address announcement ordered all servicemen-including her escort, to report for duty-Pearl Harbor had just been bombed. During the war, she worked at the Illiopolis munitions factory making timing detonators in aerial bombs supplied to the Army Air Corps.

At war's end she worked as a waitress at Strong's Cafeteria in downtown Springfield, until obtaining a job on the assembly-line at Sangamo Electric. There, she met a fellow-assembly-line worker, D.A. Campo, whom she would marry in 1948. In the early 1950s both D.A. and Edith Campo transferred to the night-shift so that they could start a business building houses in Springfield by day. They divorced in 1975.

Mrs. Campo a resident of Springfield since 1944 was the owner of E.C. Coffee Shop at Strike and Spare Bowling Alley from 1973 until 1992. She was a member of Ashland Baptist Church, Kings Daughters, and was an outstanding bowler in local leagues.

Throughout her life, Edie was a lover of animals but especially cats-providing a home to as many as 5 at a time-most of the dogs and cats she 'adopted' were stray animals she found while performing yard work at investment properties she maintained.

The Family of Edith Campo will be hosting a Celebration of her Life on Sunday, June 26, 2011, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Firefighters - Postal Lake Club, 940 West Lake Shore Drive in Springfield. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery in Pleasant Plains with her parents.

Memorials may be made In Memory of Edith Campo to the Animal Protective League, 1001 Taintor Road, Springfield, IL 62702.
