PEORIA, IL - Harold P. Kirkhus , 84, of 3417 Baskin Ridge died at 4:20 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 1995, at Bel-Wood Nursing Home.
Born July 31, 1910, in Leland, Illinois to Burton Maynard and Ida Kittleson Kirkhus, he married Ruth Mathre on June 25, 1936, in Newark. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, John of Salt Point, N.Y.; three daughters, Mrs. Jerrold (Mary Jane) Hinshaw of Dunlap, Mrs.
Christian (Sue) Swanson of Moline and Mrs. Fred (Karen) Mason of Hermance, Switzerland; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
One brother preceded him in death.
He received his bachelor's degree from Bradley University and his Master of Arts in education from the University of Illinois. He was a teacher and principal of Newark Public Schools from 1933 to 1938 and was a principal of Oswego Consolidated Elementary Schools from 1938 to 1943. He then worked for the Peoria Public School District from 1944 until retiring on June 30, 1973. He was a teacher from 1944 to 1957, director of adult education from 1954 to 1960, director of education research from 1957 to 1973 and chairman of Public and Private Education Unit-United Fund from 1957 to 1961. He was a member of Illinois, Peoria and National Education Associations and Illinois, Peoria and National Retired Teachers Associations. He also was a member of Adelphic National Literary Society, American Education Research Association, Phi Delta Kappa, Kappa Phi Kappa, Pi Kappa Delta and Beta Sigma Mu.
He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church since 1944. He also was a member of Bradley B Club and the Kiwanis Club.
Graveside services will be at Baker Cemetery in Leland.
