Andrew J. Clanton was born June 14, 1859 in Gallatin County, son of Thomas Clanton and Mary Barnard. In his early childhood he moved with his family to Rock Creek where he lived his entire life. In early manhood he chose for his life's companion, Dora Mae Groves. They were married on March 25, 1886. This marriage was blessed with seven children: Martha, Brian, Mrs. Cora Foster of Rock Creek, Mrs. Jessie Farley of Eldorado, Mrs. Charlie Farley of West Frankford and Thomas A. Clanton, deceased.
When the children were quite small, Andrew became a minister of the Baptist Church. He was a close companion of James Crider, J. B. Tucker, J. T. Thornton, Elijah Tinsley and other older ministers who have since died. He has been pastor of most of the General Baptist Churches in Hardin County and Sunday School Superintendent of Rock Creek Church for a great number of years. He supported his family by working as a blacksmith during the week and preached on Sunday. When his health no longer permitted him to preach, he rang the church bell on Sunday to summon the people to Sunday School.
Andrew Clanton died August 25, 1942. He leaves one brother, Ferrell Clanton, of Rock Creek, thirty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
