Joseph Shiner,the son of Phillis and Michael Shiner, the noted Diarist. James worked much of his life as Butcher.

On 8 June 1863 Joseph C. Shiner enlisted in the 3rd US Colored Infantry was the first regiment formed and trained at Camp William Penn, located at Chelten Hills, PA. about five miles North of Philadelphia. Recruiting started in early July and by August 10, 1863 the regiment was formed and began training. Upon completion of training the 3rd U.S.C.I was commanded by Colonel Benjamin C. Tilghman. The regiment was assigned to the Department of the South and proceeded by ship to the Charleston S.C. area. The 3rd U.S.C.I. joined the siege of Battery Wagner on Morris Island in Charleston Harbor. The 3rd along with the 104th Pennsylvania Vol. Inf. were the first units to enter the fort after the Confederates decided to withdraw. The 3rd took part in operations in the Charleston area and were then assigned to operations in the State of Florida where they served until the end of the war. The 3rd Regiment then returned to Philadelphia by ship and was mustered out on October 31,1865
