STOWE - Helen Marie O'Donnell Anderson, 88, was reunited with her husband, Rudolph, in the embrace of our Lord on Dec. 23, 2011.
A Catholic woman of deep faith, she lived an extraordinary life, yet never saw herself as extraordinary.
Helen was born on July 28, 1923, in Trenton, N.J, to Daniel Aloysius and Gertrude Rutter O'Donnell.
She attended Cathedral High School in Trenton, N.J. and was a proud graduate of Chestnut Hill College, Class of 1945. In 1944, her brother Daniel introduced her to his Notre Dame buddy Rudolph John Anderson. Helen and Rudy were married in 1949 and embarked on a life's journey which lasted for 58 years and took them to places far and near. Along the way, they shared their life and love with eight children, two of whom they welcomed into their home from orphanages in Macau and Hong Kong, China, in the 1960s. Instead of talking about changing the world for others, Helen and Rudy actually did so. Their generosity and love live on in their children, grand- children and great-grandchildren.
In 1969, Helen first visited Vermont with her family. She would never be the same. The Green Mountains became a part of her and she a part of them. She died peacefully at her home in Stowe, surrounded by her family, and the stark beauty of Vermont's winter and the mountains she loved so dearly. She will forever rest with her husband in the tranquil shadow of her beloved Mount Mansfield.
Helen is survived by her eight children and their families, Mary Jo Coughlin and her husband, George, of Kansas City, Mo., Rudolph J. Anderson and his wife, Debbie, of Spring Lake, N.J., Peter G. Anderson and his wife, Gennie, of Stowe, Thomas D. Anderson and his wife, Wendy, of Washington, D.C., Michael J. Anderson of Little Silver, N.J., Rosemary Hsaio-Mei Anderson and her spouse, Ginny Williams, of Arlington, Mass., Christopher M. Anderson and his wife, Karyn, of Palm City, Fla., and Terrence A. Anderson and his wife, Orlinda, of Orlando, Fla. Helen is also survived by her brother, Daniel A. O'Donnell and his wife, Jean; and her sisters, Gertrude Donze, and Betty Ann Richter. She also profoundly touched the lives of 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. "Our destiny is to go on beyond everything, to leave everything, to press forward to the End and find in the End our Beginning, the ever-new Beginning that has no End." - Thomas Merton
The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Helen's life will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Stowe on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at 11 a.m.
Interment will be private at a later date.
