Mrs. Irving W. Allen, 61, of 339 Dewey St., the former Marjorie P. Dunham, a life-long and highly esteemed resident of Bennington, died Wednesday afternoon at Putnam Memorial Hospital, where she had been admitted this last time only a few days. She had been remarkably active, however, until last July.
The only daughter of the late Walter E. and Anna L. (Warn) Dunham, she was born in Bennington,, Nov 16, 1894. After completing her studies at the public elementary school, she was graduated with the class of 1913 from Bennington High School. For several years she was employed in the office of the old Bennington Wax Paper Company on Scott street and later after the firm became Ben Mont Papers Inc. she had at various times assisted in its offices, where her husband was office manager for some years.
She was married to Irving W. Allen on May 9, 1916 by the Methodist pastor, the late Rev. P. L. Dow. The had resided on Silver street for several years and later for a short period on Putnam street. In 1927 they purchased their present home and have lived there since that time.
Mrs. Allen's hobby of wood carving was well known and most skillful. She learned the art from her father, who was one of Bennington's early cabinet makers, carpenter and contractor. Some of the furniture in her home was of her own carving and her artistic talent is evidenced here. She was fond of flowers and had had success with cultivating several varieties. She also liked birds.
Her devotion to her family was marked. A lover of outdoor life she had especially enjoyed camping, in which she was joined by her loved ones.
Kindly and charitable, she had made many friends who will be saddened to learn of her untimely demise. She was a member of the First Methodist Church and a former member of Miriam Rebekah lodge. She had also been active with the Benhi Band Mothers. Her work with the Red Cross will also be remembered.
Survivors are her husband, two sons, John D. Allen of Springfield, Vt., and Robert W. Allen of Bennington; one daughter, Mrs. Samuel (Marjorie) Colliano, also of Bennington; one brother Erwin W. Dunham, Bennington; two grandsons, Bruce and Allen Wade, who made their home with the Allens; and five other grandchildren.
