Edgar was born May 3, 1921, in Guilford, Conn., to Edgar A. Wilcox Sr. and Annie G. Spencer. Edgar passed on at the Hospice House in Auburn, after a long illness with congestive heart failure.
As a child, Edgar and his two brothers helped his father work the land as a tenant farmer.
In 1939, he graduated from Madison Connecticut High School, went on to attend the University of Connecticut at Storrs and obtained a degree in animal husbandry. One of his proudest college achievements was being ranked 17th in the nation in collegiate livestock judging.
His college education was interrupted by World War II, with service in the Army Air Corps. He served as a gunnery instructor and later, electronics crew chief, for a squadron of B29 bombers stationed on the island Tinian in the South Pacific.
From 1947 through 1959, he managed the livestock farm, estate grounds and horse breeding facility of Ms. Amalie Peabody in Dover, Mass. In this position, he imported Hereford cattle from England to the U.S. that resulted in significant breed improvements. He showed Hereford cattle, hogs and sheep across the U.S. and Canada.
In 1952, Edgar married Mary Schuster of Spirit Lake, Iowa. Together they had four children and in 1959, moved to a dilapidated farm in New Gloucester, to raise hogs.
Mary died in 1966 from cancer and left Edgar with four children between the ages of ten and three. One of his proudest personal achievements was that as a single parent, while raising hundreds of hogs alone, he made time to teach his youngest children to read, with all four of his children going on to obtain college and advanced degrees.
He remarried in 1968, to Nancy Sawyer of Yarmouth. From 1972 until his retirement in 1988, he worked at the Maine DHHS, licensing and inspecting adult foster care homes. He was a member of the SAD 15 school board for nine years, and a New Gloucester selectman for three.
In his later years, he enjoyed snowshoeing in New Gloucester, climbing the mountains of New Hampshire and western Maine, and reading and telling stories.
He is survived by his four children with Mary, Vincent of Fort Worth, Texas, Adeline Wilcox of Beltsville, Md., Richard of West Caldwell, N.J. and Carlton of New Gloucester; and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his wife of 38 years, Nancy Wilcox of New Gloucester; and four stepchildren, Susan Hovell of So. Dennis, Mass., Heywood Sawyer, Jr. of Norfolk, Va., Katherine Roberts of Buxton, and Madalyne Merrill of Casco; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his brothers, Spencer and Abbott; and his wife, Mary.
A graveside service will be held at the West Side Cemetery Guilford, Conn., at the convenience of his children. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Funeral Home in Gray. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Androscoggin Home Health Care and Hospice, 15 Strawberry Ave., P.O. Box 819, Lewiston, ME 04240.
