Somers, Conn. - Dec. 9 - John McKay Adan, noted fabric design engineer and for 17 years a resident of Somers, died yesterday at Albany Hospital, Albany, N.Y. Since leaving this town about four years ago, he had lived with his family in East Greenbush, N.Y.
Associated for many years with M. T. Stevens & Co. at its plant in Rockville, Mr. Adan later joined A.D. Juilliard in Stottville, N. Y., and at the time of his death was design engineer for F. C. Huyck & Son, Kenwood Mills, in Rensselaer, N. Y.
A native of Scotland he was known in America and Great Britain as one of the world's foremost clothing fabric designers. He had been associated with the Huyck firm since August, 1952.
Mr. Adan was a graduate of Robert Gordon College in his native Aberdeen and before coming to this country in 1931, he was a designer and sales representative with Crombie's of Aberdeen.
Other companies in the United States which had his services at various times were Worumbo Manufacturing Co., Cyril Johnson Woolen Co. and Hockanum Mills. He also was with Mark & Spencer, Ltd., of London for a short time.
Mr. Adan was associate editor of American Fabrics Magazine and a member of the American Association of Textile Technologists.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Dorothy (Pennington) Adan; two sons, Charles W. and John McK., Jr.; a daughter, Scotia D., and a step-daughter, Alice Pennington Sutton, all of East Greenbush; also a brother and a sister in Scotland.
The funeral will be at Somers Congregational Church Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Alison Heaps officiating. Burial will be in Somers.
