James Cone was born in East Haddam, CT, August 24, 1698, the son of Nathaniel Cone and Sarah Hungerford and the grandson of Daniel Cone and Mahitable Spencer. He married Grace Spencer on February 10, 1726. She was born in East Haddam in 1704 and died on December 7, 1767. He married second Elizabeth Warner who was born in East Haddam on July 25, 1724. All of his seven children were born to his first wife Grace.
In 1738, he was appointed a Lieutenent in the Colonial army and served under Sir William Pepperill during King George's War. He accompanied the Colonial forces that laid seige to and captured the French fortress at Louisbourg, Cape Breton Island in 1745. He was a member of the legislature of the Colony 1747-48-49, and of the Ecclesiastical Society at Millington, CT in 1733, and served as its first Clerk. He was a prominent citizen and held many civil offices of trust and responsibilty. He died at Millington on April 4, 1774.*
