David A. Baker, 67, of Newton NH, died
March 8, 2009, at the Exeter Hospital after a brief illness. He was born May 31, 1941, in Lynn MA, son of William A. Baker and the late Eleanor (Smart) Baker. As a young child, David's family moved to Newton NH. He attended the elementary school in Newton and graduated from Sanborn Seminary in Kingston NH. Even as a youth David wanted to be a fireman. He joined the Newton Fire Department in 1957 and served as their Fire Chief from 1988-2002. He continued as their Deputy Fire Chief until the time of his passing. He also worked closely with neighboring towns keeping close ties in cases that would require mutual aide. He was respected for his vast knowledge and experience. He will be missed by those he taught for he had much more to share. He was a fireman's fireman and a good friend to many.
David also had a passion for Forestry and had received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1965. This led him to work for a couple of years with the federal government within the profession. In 1969, he and Wendy started their own business, Tamarack Tree Service, which they ran for 35 years and sold in 2004 to semi-retire. From 1966-1972, David proudly served in the U.S. Army National Guard. For many years, David spent weeks at a time in the summer months with the New Hampshire Forestry Service fighting forest fires, predominantly out west. David enjoyed hiking the rough terrain, working long hours, sleeping on the ground, and the comradery of the other firefighters.
The family fondly remembers David dropping what he was doing to help his children, grandchildren, or friends with any project that presented itself. He was a kind and generous man who will be truly missed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Wendy (Irvine) Baker of Newton; daughters and their husbands, Dianna and Alex Pagnottaro of Kingston NH, Alison Baker and Todd Bonita of Greenland NH, and Kristen and Jeffrey Milks of Greenland NH; grandchildren Caitlyn, Christopher, Emma, Max, Carolyn, and Laura; father William A. Baker of Newton; sister Pamela Mastroianni of Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.
