Donald R. Abar, age 87, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away on February 3, 2005 at his home in Grand Forks, ND.

Donald was born July 15, 1917 in Benson County ND, the son of Fred and Jennie (Christopherson) Abar. He was raised and educated in Langdon. ND. He moved to Thief River Falls, MN in 1938, where he was employed with the Ford Garage. He moved to Grand Forks, ND with his parents in 1940, where he was employed with the Forx Motor Company.

Donald entered the United States Army Ordinance Department on September 7, 1942 at Fort Snelling, MN. He served as a platoon T/sgt. in Texas and Mississippi. During World War II, he served in the European Theatre. He received his honorable discharge from military service on November 28, 1945 at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.

Upon returning to Grand Forks, he married Colleen Moore on June 15, 1947, in St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was employed with Forx Motors as a Parts Manager until November 1, 1955, when he purchased the Rite Spot Liquor Store. He owned and operated his business until retiring in 1980.

Donald was past president of the Grand Forks Exchange Club, a member of the Elks Club, Club 13 Bridge Group, the American Legion, Post 157, 40 et 8, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3817 and a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed bridge, hunting, fishing and golf.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen; sons Rick (Penny), Tom (Merilee), both of Grand Forks, ND, Jim (Debbie), East Grand Forks, MN, Don Jr., Salem, OR, and Bob (Jesseca), Dayton, OH; daughters, Jennie (Mike) Buckley, and Linda Abar, both of Grand Forks, ND; 12 grandchildren; 1 great-grand daughter and a niece, Janice Wolf, Los Angeles, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Vivian Peterson; a brother Harold and a grandson, Ryan James Abar.

Memorials may be given to Disabled American Veterans Chapter 2 or the Holy Family Catholic Church Memorial Fund.

Mass of Christian Burial: 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2005 in Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND

Visitation: 5 to 7:00 p.m. Monday with 7:00 p.m. vigil service in Gregory J. Norman Norman Funeral Home, So. Washington St., Grand Forks, ND and one hour before the liturgy at the church on Tuesday.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.

Military Honors: Members of the DAV Chapter 2, American Legion Post 157 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817, East Grand Forks, MN at spring interment.
