August Desen, 79, a retired farmer of southwestern Nebraska, died at the St. Catherine hospital at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning following an illness of almost 18 months. Funeral services have not definitely been arranged at this time, however, it is expected to hold the last rites at Stratton Friday afternoon.

Mr. Desen moved with his wife from Stratton to Culbertson only four months ago, in order to be nearer to his son, Ed, who lives near this place, the latter's family being in a better position to administer care to the ailing parent. His condition grew worse, and he was taken to the McCook hospital where death claimed him Wednesday morning.

The deceased has resided on various farms in Hitchcock county for the past twenty-five years and is well-known throughout the county. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Ed of Culbertson, and Harry of Omaha.

DESEN -- Funeral services were held at the home here Friday afternoon for August Desen, whose death occurred last Wednesday at the St. Catherine's hospital in McCook, following a lingering illness. The body was then taken to Stratton where burial was made in the Stratton cemetery.

August Desen was born in Germany July 27, 1854 and came to America in the year of 1871. On February 13, 1881 he was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Grasen and to this union were born four sons and three daughters.

In 1907 he moved with his family to Stratton where he remained a resident until last February when he moved to Culbertson. Grandpa, as he was generally known here, was a wonderfully happy, congenial life that made the sun shine thru dark places and his constant smile endeared him in the hearts of all who had the privilege to meet him.

He was confirmed in the St. John's Evangelical church in Germany and was a faithful member until the last, holding his membership in Kankakee, Illinois. His every day life told how he knew his Lord. He was a sufferer for a long time out, bore it kindly and patiently, and we never heard him complain or scold. But on June 15, 1932, God said, "Grandpa, it is enough, come dwell with me." He was 77 years, 10 months, and 18 days old at the time of death.

He leaves to mourn his loss an aged wife, two sons, Edward of Culbertson and Harry of Omaha, the other five children preceding him in death. He also leaves eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a host of other relatives and friends.
