Death of George Abernathy
Died, August 26 [sic], 1906, George Abernathy, aged 68 years, 4 months and 24 days.

Mr. Abernathy was born in Augusta Ill., April 2, 1838, and though but a recent resident of this section of the country he could justly lay claim to being one of Nebraska's pioneers. In 1859 he first took up his residence in Nebraska, locating at Nebraska City, where he remained until the first of March 1901, when with his family he moved to Garfield county. On the 1st of November 1861 he enlisted with the 1st Nebraska Cavalry and served continuously until his discharge on Nov. 10, 1864. He was married at Quincy Ill. In 1866 to Josephine M. Stuart who died in November 1877. His second marriage was in 1880 to Miss Julia Gilbert at Astoria, Ill, who with five children, four by his former wife still survive him. About two years ago Mr. Abernathy suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never entirely recovered. He was taken worse Sunday afternoon and in the evening of the same day passed peacefully to the great beyond.

Funeral services were conducted at the family home Tuesday morning by
Rev. Homer and the remains were laid at rest in the Ord Cemetery. In life
he was a man of many friends and wide acquaintance and a long procession
followed the body to its last resting place.
