Vella Bauman, the daughter of Julius Rankin and Minnie (Meyer) Melvin, was born on December 18, 1909 on a farm northwest of Swanton, Saline County, Nebraska. She passed away on February 18, 2007 at the Nelson Good Samaritan Center in Nelson, Nebraska at the age of 97 years and 2 months.
Her parents moved from Saline County to Nuckolls County in October of 1915 where she attended Stone School District #16. In 1926 the family moved to Nora where Vella attended Nora High School and graduated in 1930. She faithfully attended the Alumni Banquets held in Ruskin each year after graduation.
She was briefly married in 1935 to Duane Cox and to this union two sons were born, they being Marlin and Arlyce. She worked briefly at the Nora Post Office for Postmaster Jesse Hamel and then was hired as manager of the Nora Grocery Store owned by Alda Gerbeling until her marriage to John W. Bauman on February 23, 1949 at the Methodist Parsonage in Nelson, Nebraska. They made their home on a farm east of Nelson where she continued to live after John's death in 1981. In 1999 she moved to the Superior Manor located in Superior, Nebraska where she developed many
friendships and enjoyed going over to eat in the Lady Vestey Center with the group. In 2005, she moved to the Nelson Good Samaritan Center where she resided until the time of her death.
She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She always had a positive attitude and saw only the best in people. The highlight of the holiday seasons was to have all the family home
for one of her good home-cooked meals. She truly enjoyed having the grandchildren and great- grandchildren come for a visit. Many a birthday was spent at her home where she always had a
special cake baked and decorated for that particular grandchild's birthday. She would spend as much time with the grandchildren as she could and really enjoyed having them around. It was her
goal to make baby blankets for each new grandchild and great-grandchild until her health began to fail. She crocheted and made afghans for every member of her family through the years. It was a labor of love.
Vella was baptized and a life-time member of the Methodist Church. She was a faithful, very active and dedicated member of the Nora Methodist Church and Nora Methodist Women. She was always willing to assist in any way at any time in whatever she was asked to do. She was always involved in the Annual Soup & Pie Supper and Bazaar held each year at the Church as a
fund-raising event. Her specialty was the vegetable soup detail. She also was one of the Church ladies who met every Tuesday and Thursday regularly for a "Quilting Party". The completed
quilt was then auctioned off at the Annual Bazaar. She was one of those rare people who are excellent seamstresses and good at any handiwork that she attempted. All of us benefitted from
She was a charter member of the U.D. Extension Club of Nelson until it was dissolved and then it became a social gathering for the members.
