Kelley Jo Gavin, 47, of Callaway died Saturday, June 5, 2010, after struggling many years with poor health. Kelly was born Jan. 8, 1963, in Norfolk, Va., to Robert and Mona (Van Doren) Gavin.
Survivors are: her mother of Callaway; brothers, Tim of Storm Lake, Iowa, Troy of Sutherland and Todd of Cozad; nieces, Christina and Lindsi, nephews, Tycen and Colt and a host of friends and relatives.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Gavin.
She was the second of four children. She was a great sister to her three brothers. Kelley attended several grade schools based on where her father was stationed in the military. While attending school in Puerto Rico, she rode horses and won many trophies at horse show competitions across the island. Kelley attended high school at Callaway High and graduated in 1981. She then continued her education at Chadron State College and graduated with a degree in English, with minors in Humanities and Criminal Justice. At one point of her professional career, Kelley was a 911 Dispatcher in Chadron. She also dispatched in Columbus and Broken Bow.
She was awarded the Nebraska EMS HERO Award in 1990 for giving directions over the phone which resulted in saving the life of a baby. She was also presented the NEBCA Lifesaver Award in 1989 for her heroics. She was also a volunteer EMT at Chadron, Broken Bow and Callaway.
Kelley loved to write and spent most of her career as a reporter. She was managing editor of the Hot Springs, S.D., Star and also the News Editor of the Chardon Record. She was the Lifestyles Editor for the Kearney Hub and also wrote for the North Platte Telegraph until her health began to fail. She was a member of NPWA (Nebraska Press Women's Association) and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 59. One of Kelleys many loves was photography; she took many senior pictures, and covered special events such as weddings and baptisms, usually at no charge.
While in Kearney, Kelley was a member of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She loved the Lord from a young age. Kelley lived her life as a faithful follower of Jesus. Since living in Callaway, she has attended the Callaway Community Christian Church. Kelly Jo was a giver. She never passed up opportunity to help someone in any way she could. She will be missed greatly.
