Charles Edgar Allen, one of twelve children of Tandy and Joanna Smith Van Nice Allen, was born near LaGrange, Iowa, on January 8, 1865 and passed away in Portland, Oregon on November 27, 1962.

Mr. Allen came to Nebraska in 1886 by immigrant wagon and selected a homestead in Cheyenne County. Later, he located in Gibbon, Nebraska and on August 29, 1889, he was married to Sue L. Morrow. In March 1890, Mr. and Mrs. Allen came to Cozad, Nebraska to make their future home. Mr. Allen engaged in the mercantile business, which he followed for thirty-five years.

Soon after arrival in Cozad, this couple joined a group to organize the First Presbyterian Church. This church was their church home through the years.

Mr. Allen was interested at an early year in irrigation of land and was a past President of the Nebraska State Irrigation Association. He served his district in the Nebraska State Senate, first in the old capitol building and later sessions of the legislature in the new Capitol building.

Like other men of his time, he was interested in the development of his town and the community. Mr. Allen served a number of times on the village board and the Board of Education. He was a Charter Member of Cozad's first Commercial Club.

In 1905, he was one of the organizers of the First State Bank and for a number of years was President. He was a Charter Member of the Cozad Rotary Club. He had been a member of the Masonic Fraternity for more than two thirds of a century, a member of the Meridian Lodge 188 F & AM since 1890. He was the last living charter member of Meridian Chapter number 74, Order of Eastern Star.

He had taken his thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite and the Mystic Shrine and was a member of Palestine Commandery number 13 at North Platte. He was an honorary member of Cozad Lodge number 55 IOOF.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sue L. Allen, a daughter, Esther Marie, two sons, Dr. E. V. Allen and Frank P. Allen.

He is survived by Katherine Worley Allen to whom he was married in 1925, one son Ralph M. Allen, Wichita, Kansas, three daughters, Edith I. Allen, Cozad, Nebraska, Dorothy Murphy, Portland, Oregon, Hortense L. Allen, Rochester, Minnesota, 10 grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.

Interment was in the Cozad Cemetery with Masonic rites.
