Isaac Burns was the only child of Benjamin Burns and Sarah Smith. He was born 14 Nov 1800 in Botetourt Co., VA. He met and married Phoebe Persinger on 7 Jan 1821 in Howard Co., MO. She was the daughter of John R. Persinger and Rachel Viola "Unknown".

Their children were born in quick succession: John Wood, 1822, Judy Hale, 1823, William Fletcher, 1824, Asbury Wesley, 1826, Thomas Aubrey, 1827 and Sally Ann, 1828. All were born in Missouri.

The 1830 census shows the family in Clay, MO. Four more children were born in the next ten year period: Dolly Ann, 1830, Malinda Glenn, 1834, James Sampson, 1837 and Emily Greene, 1838.

Isaac began preaching in the homes of his neighbors in the spring of 1835, as soon as he arrived in the township of Benton. Much is written about Isaac being a traveling minister. They say"he was a typical frontier preacher. He was somewhat eccentric and old fashioned in his notions but Nebraska Methodism never had a more devoted man than was he." (History of Nebraska by Morton & Watkins, 1918, p. 796.) On 5 Dec 1833, Isaac was awarded a land patent in Clinton Co., MO.

The 1840 census shows them living in Platte Co., MO. Here William McKendree was born in 1840.

More land patents were awarded to Isaac. One land patent for 160 acres and 1 for 40 acres in Harrison Co,MO. These were awarded 1 May 1846. Then on 1 Jun 1848 another land patent gives him 40 more acres in Harrison Co., MO.

The 1850 census shows the family in Athens, Gentry. MO. He was the second minister in charge of the Methodist Church in Athens Twp. Their last two children, Isaac, Jr., 1851 and Louisa, 1853 were born.

By 1860 the census shows that Isaac had moved his family to Johnson co., Nebraska Territory.

The 1870 census shows them living in Otoe Precinct, Otoe Co., Nebraska. Louisa is living with Isaac and Phoebe.

Isaac died 4 Sep 1872 and is buried at Cincinnati Cemetery, DuBois, Pawnee, Nebraska. After Isaac's death, Phoebe moved to be near William McKendree and she died of typhoid fever on 11 Feb 1874 in Concordia, Cloud, Kansas at the age of 72.
