Frank Harris
Birth: Jul. 21, 1857
Rhode Island, USA
Death: 1934
Big Pine
Inyo County
California, USA

Frank "Shorty" Harris was orphaned when he was 7 years old. In the late 1870's, he rode the rails west to seek his fortune in mining, eventually ending up in Death Valley. In the summer of 1904, he and Ernest "Ed" Cross discovered the Bullfrog Mining district. Cross later sold his interest for $125,000. Upon making the discovery, Harris celebrated, and after sobering up six days later, found that he had sold his interest for $1,000. Before he died, he requested that he be buried next to his friend, Jim Dayton, in Death Valley. The grave is located on West Side Road. (bio by: Alan Lopez)
